The start of a new phase
I have recently started studying a 3-year part-time MSc in Digital Marketing Communications. The reason I chose to do this was because I felt I have worked in the digital industry since 1997 and because I have been self-taught all this time, perhaps I would benefit from some focused learning in this area.
So, having gone through the induction, received my core text books and then promptly having to work oversea for nearly two weeks, I found myself in the position of trying to catch up with the weekly activities that had been set by my tutor. Even though participation wasn’t mandatory, I wanted to get started. However, I really underestimated the balance that is needed to allow myself time to study as well as carry on with work and family life.
I’ve found myself really struggling, not just with simply reading the texts, but with re-learning how to actually study after all these years. So I will try to organise things more and really get stuck in.
Any suggestions on studying skills would be really appreciated!

Hey Mark
Trust me, you are not the only one.
The MSC has been great for me so far, but a lot more work than I anticipated.
Try make notes while you study, even if it is just bullet points
Stick in there, we will get through it.

Thanks Malcolm,
I’ve invested in a lot of Post-it notes and have started using Evernote to help compile the online research, which is proving useful.
Onward and upward!

How are you finding it 7 months down the line? Found any good techniques?
I keep thinking I need to study a bit every single night which is stupid because I often have other things happening which makes me feel guilty if I haven’t studied. So for this next assignment I need to set days for studying I think, and less cramming in the 3 weekends up to the deadline! Getting the balance is the hardest part!!!

I often find the balance between family, work and study extremely difficult if I’m honest.
I feel I need to be reading more and often have slight panic attacks when it comes to writing the assignments themselves — am I doing enough, am I getting enough detail in, am I being critical enough? That sort of thing.
My book collection has increased — don’t know when I’ll get time to read it all!
